Project description

The km 17 km scholar group is located, as the name suggests, 17km north of the capital of the province of Oudomsay, on the road to Dien Bien Phu in Vietnam. It brings together students from different mountain villages. Often students must stay in boarding school or walk several hours a day to reach the school.

The director and different teachers of the scholar group wanted to build a library that would also be a life and meeting place. This institution receives children from 5 villages for teaching from primary to end of secondarary. Some of these villages are far away in the mountains. In 2012, 294 students attends the classes, 50 students remain in boarding school, teaching classes range from the first primary class at the terminal.

The library would have a social function for children from distant villages and staying in boarding school. It would improve the knowledge of the population and reading ability of students, will improve the work comfort and lives of students and teachers.

The idea was to create a reading room within the school group. The 10m by 5m class would be large enough and well equipped to welcome the population of the scholar group and particularly that of the boarding school. There will cupboards to store books and many tables to allow students to relax by reading books. There will be a flight of 2 * 7m to improve the social character of this place.

The project beneficiaries were willing to participate in any hand of unprofessional work. The villagers were ok to find all the necessary wood (formwork, framework, false ceilings) and collected a sum of three million kip (300EUR).

This project used a local knowledge for the construction. The foreman is a native person of the village, the carpenter who built the furniture too.

The material used is also very well distributed in the region.
